Albaola Maritime Culture Factory brings Basque maritime heritage to life in a historic shipyard on the banks of the Urumea River. The museum focuses on the region's rich seafaring traditions, particularly the art of building wooden ships. Visitors can watch skilled craftsmen at work, restoring and constructing traditional vessels using centuries-old techniques. The centerpiece is the ongoing reconstruction of a 16th-century whaling ship, the San Juan, which sank off Labrador in 1565. Interactive exhibits and guided tours explain the history of Basque whaling, fishing, and trade across the Atlantic. The setting itself is evocative: the smell of wood and tar, the sound of hammers, and the sight of half-built hulls create an immersive experience. Albaola is not just a museum but a living workshop where history is actively preserved.
