The Old Cathedral of Salamanca (Catedral Vieja) is a serene Romanesque gem dating from the 12th century. It was built between 1140 and 1200 and is smaller and more intimate than its neighbor. The interior features a stunning altarpiece with 53 panels depicting scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin Mary, painted by artists including Nicolás Florentino. The cloister is a peaceful oasis with Gothic and Romanesque elements, and the Torre del Gallo (Rooster Tower) offers a close-up view of the distinctive weather vane. The cathedral also houses a museum with medieval art. Its age and atmosphere provide a contrast to the New Cathedral.
