Alhaurín el Grande sits in the Guadalhorce Valley, surrounded by olive groves and mountains, offering a contrast to the coastal resorts. Its main landmark is the ruined Moorish castle, Castillo de Alhaurín, which dates from the 12th-13th centuries and provides panoramic views of the valley. The town's old quarter is a maze of narrow, winding streets with whitewashed houses, flower-filled balconies, and small plazas. The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación, a 16th-century Baroque building, dominates the main square. Alhaurín el Grande is famous for its Sunday market, one of the largest in the province, where locals and tourists alike browse stalls selling fresh produce, clothing, crafts, and antiques. The town also has several tapas bars and restaurants serving traditional Andalusian cuisine. Its inland location makes it cooler than the coast, especially in summer, and it's a gateway for hiking in the Sierra de Mijas.
