The Arco de Santa María is one of Burgos's most recognizable landmarks, a grand city gate that once formed part of the medieval walls. Originally built in the 14th century, it was rebuilt in the 16th century as a triumphal arch to welcome kings and dignitaries. The façade is richly decorated with statues of notable figures from Burgos's history, including El Cid and the city's founder, Count Diego Porcelos. Visitors can walk through the arch and admire its intricate stonework, including a central niche with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The gate now houses a small exhibition space and offers a glimpse into the city's fortified past. Its location on the banks of the Arlanzón River makes it a picturesque spot for photos, especially at sunset when the stone glows golden.
