Almería Cathedral, known as the 'Cathedral of the Incarnation,' is a unique fortified church constructed between 1524 and 1562. Its design reflects the need for defense against Barbary pirates, with thick walls, buttresses, and a flat roof for artillery. Inside, the Gothic ribbed vaults contrast with Renaissance chapels and a stunning altarpiece. The cathedral's exterior is austere, but the main façade features intricate Plateresque decoration. Visitors can also climb the tower for city views and explore the small museum of religious art.

Don't miss

  • Admire the Plateresque main façade, a masterpiece of Spanish Renaissance carving.
  • Climb the bell tower for a panoramic view of Almería and the Alcazaba.
  • See the 16th-century altarpiece in the main chapel, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles.
