Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary is a marine protected area that encompasses the waters off Hermanus and extends along the coast, providing a safe haven for southern right whales during their breeding and calving season. The sanctuary is part of a larger network of protected areas that help conserve these gentle giants and their habitat. Visitors can observe whales from numerous vantage points along the shore, including the Cliff Path and the town's beaches, where the whales often swim within a few hundred meters of the coast. The sanctuary also supports a rich marine ecosystem, including dolphins, seals, and seabirds, making it a prime spot for wildlife viewing.
