Namdaemun, officially called Sungnyemun, is the oldest wooden gate in Seoul and a proud National Treasure. Originally built in 1398, it was reconstructed after a 2008 arson fire and reopened in 2013. Visitors can admire its elegant two-tiered pavilion and massive stone base from the outside; the interior is not open to the public. The gate is beautifully illuminated at night and sits at the center of a busy traffic circle, contrasting centuries-old architecture with modern city life.
