On my last day in St. Petersburg, I chose Gogol for dinner. The food and atmosphere were great. I felt like I was eating in a Russian restaurant in the 1950s. The menu booklet and the bell on the table are wonderful details. The waiters were polite and dressed in an old-fashioned style. Apart from the food, the homemade fruit juice was very nice. However, I can't say the same for the liqueurs. But to be honest, I don't like liqueurs very much in general. Therefore, liqueur lovers may not take this into consideration. In addition to all this, I will tell you about a situation I experienced there. There was a Far Eastern couple at my table next to me. They both burped very loudly throughout the meal. I think burping is a sign of gratitude and appreciation for the food in the culture of these people. But in many places in the world, this is not a very nice thing :) Don't get me wrong, Far Eastern friends, but this is a bit disturbing.
The restaurant itself is beautiful and really cozy. Probably one of the most beautiful in SPB. The orders are taken when yoh ring the bell which can be a bit annoying if there is a lot of people and some need to ring twice. The service took too much time, especially for some dishes which are pretty fast to make like the salad in the pictures. So you are waiting for a long time sometimes. In total, our meal took 2hours for one salad, one dish and 1 dessert. The waitress was nice though. The food itself was good but not exceptional. The salad was mostly leaves with some meat around and a bit of diced vegetables. The meat was good but not perfectly cooked medium as asked. Desert were really good. I would say that overall it was not bad but it is a bit too expensive for the dishes served.
The food was not delicious really, yet the place was beautiful and the ambiance was really nice, the staff were friendly and helpful
One of the first places we happened to dine during our trip to St. Petersburg chosen by our friends living here as they knew we would want something authentic Russian. It didn’t disappoint. Nice calming atmosphere of St.Petersburg flat of 19th century with many connotations to Gogol. Good if you want to have a conversation with friends in a quiet place. The food was good, although not amazing. The prices are midrange. The service was very good. Overall, happy.
