The Peter and Paul Fortress, founded by Peter the Great in 1703, is the birthplace of St. Petersburg. Its star-shaped bastions enclose the Peter and Paul Cathedral, where nearly all Romanov emperors and empresses are buried. Visitors can tour the Trubetskoy Bastion prison, which once held political prisoners, and explore the Museum of the History of St. Petersburg. A daily cannon firing from the Naryshkin Bastion at noon is a beloved tradition. The fortress offers panoramic views of the Neva River.
