Palace Square is the heart of St. Petersburg, a vast open space that has witnessed imperial parades, revolutionary gatherings, and modern celebrations. The square is framed by the Baroque Winter Palace (now part of the Hermitage Museum) and the neoclassical General Staff Building, whose curved facade is crowned by a triumphal arch. At its center stands the Alexander Column, a 47.5-meter granite monolith commemorating Russia's victory over Napoleon. Visitors can stroll across the cobblestones, admire the architecture, and feel the pulse of Russian history. The square is also a venue for concerts and festivals.
Don't miss
- Walk from the Winter Palace to the General Staff Building to appreciate the architectural harmony.
- Look up at the Alexander Column's angel-topped summit, which is not fixed to the base but stands by gravity alone.
- Visit the Hermitage Museum, which occupies the Winter Palace and offers world-class art collections.
