Burkhan Bakshin Altan Sume, meaning 'Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni,' is the spiritual heart of Kalmykia. Completed in 2005, this majestic temple features a 12-meter golden Buddha statue, intricate mandalas, and colorful thangkas. Visitors can walk around the temple clockwise, spin prayer wheels, and observe monks chanting in the prayer hall. The surrounding gardens are dotted with smaller stupas and a statue of the Dalai Lama, creating a peaceful oasis in the steppe.

Don't miss

  • Marvel at the 12-meter gilded Buddha statue inside the main prayer hall.
  • Spin the rows of prayer wheels along the temple's outer walkway for good fortune.
  • Explore the temple grounds, which include a meditation garden and a small museum on Kalmyk Buddhism.
