Perched on a hilltop, the Fort of São Filipe de Setúbal is a star-shaped fortress built in the 1600s to defend the city. Today, visitors can explore its ramparts and bastions, which offer some of the best panoramic vistas of the Sado estuary and the white sands of Tróia. Inside, the former governor's quarters now house a pousada hotel and a small chapel adorned with azulejo tiles. The fortress also hosts occasional art exhibitions and cultural events, blending history with modern leisure.

Don't miss

  • Walk the ramparts for 360-degree views of Setúbal, the Sado River, and the Tróia Peninsula.
  • Admire the 17th-century azulejo panels in the Chapel of São Filipe.
  • Visit the on-site pousada for a drink on the terrace overlooking the river.
