The Castle of Palmela crowns a hill in the Arrábida region, its origins dating to the 8th-century Moorish occupation and later expanded by the Knights of Santiago. Today, part of the castle houses a pousada (historic hotel), but visitors can freely explore the ramparts, towers, and the Gothic church of Santa Maria. The real draw is the 360-degree view: across the Sado Estuary, the Atlantic, and the Arrábida mountains. The castle's restaurant serves regional cuisine.

Don't miss

  • Climb the keep for sweeping views of the Sado River and Tróia Peninsula
  • Explore the 12th-century Church of Santa Maria with its rose window
  • Walk the outer walls and see the original Moorish cistern
