Perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic, the Hermitage of Mãe de Deus (Mother of God) is a charming example of Azorean religious architecture. Built in the 1500s, its simple exterior belies a interior decorated with beautiful azulejo panels depicting biblical scenes. The chapel's small size and serene atmosphere make it a peaceful stop. From the adjacent terrace, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of the sea and coastline. It remains an active place of worship, occasionally hosting small services.
Don't miss
- Study the 17th-century azulejo tiles illustrating the life of the Virgin Mary
- Enjoy the panoramic ocean view from the chapel's terrace
- Note the Manueline-style doorway and simple altar
