Baleal Island is a small, flat island connected to the Peniche peninsula by a narrow sandbar, creating a unique double-sided beach. On one side, calm waters are ideal for swimming and families; on the other, consistent Atlantic swells attract surfers from around the world. The island's beaches, Praia do Baleal and Praia do Baleal Norte, are lined with surf schools, cafes, and rental shops. Visitors can walk across the sandbar at low tide, explore the island's rocky points, or simply relax on the soft sand while watching surfers ride the waves.
Don't miss
- Surfing at Praia do Baleal Norte, one of Portugal's best beginner waves
- Walking the sandbar connecting the island to the mainland
- Sunbathing and swimming at the calmer southern beach
