Portalegre, the capital of the Alto Alentejo region, is a city of elegant 18th-century buildings, wide squares, and a rich cultural heritage. Its highlight is the Sé (Cathedral) of Portalegre, a 16th-century structure with a striking Renaissance façade and a museum of sacred art. The city is also known for its traditional tapestry workshops, where hand-woven tapestries have been produced since the 18th century; visitors can watch artisans at work in the Manufactura de Tapeçarias de Portalegre. Other attractions include the Convento de São Bernardo, now a cultural center, and the Museu Municipal, housed in a former bishop's palace. The historic center is compact and walkable, with cafes and shops lining the main square, Praça da República.
