Elevador do Lavra is a historic funicular railway in Lisbon, Portugal, located near the Avenida da Liberdade. It connects the lower part of the city (Rua Camara Pestana) to the higher neighborhood of Campo de Santana. Opened in 1884, it is one of the oldest funiculars in the world. The ride is short but steep, climbing about 100 meters in just a few minutes. The wooden cars are charmingly vintage, with a retro interior that evokes Lisbon's 19th-century tram era. The funicular offers a unique perspective of the city as it ascends, with glimpses of traditional buildings and tiled facades. At the top, visitors can explore the quieter residential area of Campo de Santana, which has a small garden and views over the city. The Elevador do Lavra is less crowded than other Lisbon funiculars like the Elevador da Bica, making it a pleasant alternative. It is also a practical way to save energy when exploring the hilly city. The ride is included in the Viva Viagem transport card, making it affordable and convenient.
