The Giant Mountains (Karkonosze in Polish, Krkonoše in Czech) form the highest part of the Sudetes, stretching about 40 km along the border. The range features a distinctive alpine character with glacial cirques, rocky peaks, and high-altitude peat bogs. Popular activities include hiking the main ridge trail, skiing in resorts like Szklarska Poręba and Karpacz, and visiting the source of the Elbe River. The area is rich in folklore, including the legend of the mountain spirit Rübezahl (Liczyrzepa). The range's highest point, Śnieżka, offers a 360-degree view and hosts a historic observatory.
