Iglesia y Monasterio El Carmen is a stunning example of baroque architecture in Trujillo. The church, built in the 18th century, features a richly decorated facade with intricate stone carvings and a striking altarpiece inside. The adjacent monastery houses one of the largest collections of colonial art in Peru, including paintings from the Cusco School, sculptures, and gilded frames. Visitors can tour the cloisters, which are adorned with azulejo tiles depicting religious scenes, and the chapter rooms filled with artworks. The monastery's peaceful gardens offer a serene contrast to the ornate interiors. The site is still used by Carmelite nuns, so parts may be off-limits.
