The Zuidpoldermolen is a functioning polder windmill located in the countryside near Edam, within the municipality of Volendam. Built in the 17th century, this octagonal thatched-roof mill was used to drain the surrounding polder, keeping the land dry for agriculture. Today, it remains operational and is open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into traditional Dutch water management. Visitors can climb the steep stairs to see the massive wooden gears and sails in action, and learn about the miller's work from the on-site guide. The surrounding flat landscape, crisscrossed by canals and dotted with grazing cows, provides a quintessentially Dutch backdrop. The mill's location along a quiet bike path makes it a popular stop for cyclists exploring the Waterland region.
