Edam, a charming town just north of Volendam, is world-famous for its cheese, but offers much more. Its historic center is a maze of narrow streets, quaint canals, and well-preserved 17th-century merchant houses. The weekly cheese market (held in summer) is a colorful spectacle where farmers in traditional attire negotiate over rounds of Edam cheese. Beyond cheese, you can explore the Grote Kerk (Great Church) with its stunning stained glass, or take a boat tour along the canals. The town is compact and walkable, making it easy to soak in the Dutch Golden Age atmosphere.
