The Paard van Marken (Horse of Marken) is a striking red lighthouse located on the eastern tip of the island of Marken. Built in 1839, it stands as a sentinel over the Markermeer, a lake created after the closure of the Zuiderzee. The lighthouse gets its name from the horse-shaped marker that once stood nearby. While the lighthouse itself is not open to the public, it is a beloved landmark and a popular subject for photographers. Visitors can walk or cycle along the dike to get close views, and the surrounding area offers beautiful vistas of the water and the island's traditional houses.
