The Valkhof Museum sits atop the Valkhof, a hill that once housed a palace of Emperor Charlemagne. The museum blends archaeology and fine art, offering visitors a journey through Nijmegen's past. Its collection includes Roman artifacts, medieval religious art, and modern works by local artists. The building itself is modern, with large windows that frame views of the Waal River and the city. Visitors can explore exhibits on the Roman settlement of Noviomagus, the medieval Duchy of Gelre, and the city's role in World War II. The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions, often focusing on contemporary art or regional history. A highlight is the outdoor terrace, where you can see the remains of the 12th-century St. Nicholas Chapel and the 16th-century Valkhof bastion.

Don't miss

  • Roman glassware and pottery from the Noviomagus settlement
  • Medieval altarpieces and religious sculptures
  • The 'View of Nijmegen' by Jan van Goyen (17th-century painting)
  • Remains of the St. Nicholas Chapel on the museum grounds
