The Martinitoren is the defining landmark of Groningen, a 97-meter Gothic bell tower that dominates the city's skyline. Visitors can climb the 260 steps to the top for sweeping views of the city's historic center, canals, and the flat Dutch countryside beyond. The tower is part of the Martinikerk complex and houses a carillon with 62 bells, which ring out regularly. On clear days, you can see as far as the Wadden Sea. The climb is steep and narrow, but the reward is a 360-degree panorama that makes the effort worthwhile. Inside, there are small exhibits on the tower's history and the carillon.
Don't miss
- Panoramic views from the top of the tower
- The carillon, which plays melodies on the hour
- The narrow spiral staircase with 260 steps
- Historical exhibits inside the tower
