Hortus Haren is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the Netherlands, offering a serene escape into nature just outside Groningen. The garden spans over 20 hectares and is divided into several themed sections, each with its own character. The most famous is the Chinese garden, a stunning recreation of a classical Jiangnan-style garden complete with a pagoda, lotus pond, and bamboo groves. Other highlights include the rock garden with alpine plants, the historic orangery, and the 'Hemel en Aarde' (Heaven and Earth) labyrinth. The garden also features a large collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, and rare trees. Visitors can stroll along winding paths, relax by the ponds, and enjoy seasonal blooms from spring to autumn. The garden's peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon.
