Pashupatinath Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the most sacred Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Located on the banks of the Bagmati River in Kathmandu, the temple complex features a pagoda-style main shrine, numerous smaller temples, and ghats where cremation rituals take place. Visitors can observe these ceremonies from across the river, gaining insight into Hindu death rites. The temple's spiritual atmosphere is palpable, especially during festivals like Maha Shivaratri when thousands of pilgrims gather. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main temple but can explore the surrounding grounds and riverbanks.
Don't miss
- Observe cremation ceremonies from the eastern bank of the Bagmati River
- See the golden spire of the main temple and the silver doors
- Visit the nearby Guhyeshwari Temple, another sacred Shakti Peetha
