Sule Pagoda is an ancient Buddhist stupa located at the very heart of downtown Yangon, sitting in the middle of a busy traffic circle. Its distinctive octagonal shape and golden spire make it an unmistakable landmark. Unlike the hilltop Shwedagon, Sule Pagoda is embedded in the city's grid of colonial buildings, offering a serene contrast to the urban bustle. According to legend, it is over 2,000 years old and enshrines a hair relic of the Buddha. Visitors can walk around the base, observe locals making offerings, and enjoy the calm atmosphere amid the city's energy. The pagoda also serves as a key gathering point for festivals and political events.

Don't miss

  • Admire the unique octagonal shape of the stupa, rare among Myanmar pagodas.
  • Watch devotees offer flowers and light candles at the many shrines around the base.
  • Observe the contrast between the ancient pagoda and the surrounding British colonial architecture.
