The Rotunda of Xewkija, officially the Church of St John the Baptist, is a modern architectural marvel built between 1952 and 1978. Its massive dome, 75 meters in diameter, is supported by a circular colonnade and is visible from miles away. Inside, the church is spacious and minimalist, with a central altar beneath the dome. Visitors can climb to the top of the dome for sweeping views of Gozo and Comino. The church replaced an earlier Baroque structure, and its design reflects a bold departure from traditional Maltese church architecture.

Don't miss

  • Climbing the dome for panoramic views of Gozo and the surrounding sea
  • The impressive interior space, with its clean lines and natural light
  • The original Baroque church's bell tower, preserved next to the rotunda
