The Royal Opera House in Valletta was originally built in the 19th century but was heavily bombed during World War II, leaving only its grand neoclassical facade and partial walls standing. In a bold architectural move, Italian architect Renzo Piano designed a modern open-air theatre within the ruins, which opened in 2013. Visitors can explore the site, attend concerts, operas, and cultural events staged against the historic backdrop, and appreciate the striking contrast between old stone and contemporary design.

Don't miss

  • See the preserved neoclassical facade and bomb-damaged walls integrated into the modern theatre.
  • Attend a performance at the open-air Pjazza Teatru Rjal, especially during summer festivals.
  • Explore the underground foyer and exhibition spaces that reveal the building's layered history.
