The Fortress of Luxembourg is one of Europe's most impressive defensive systems, with fortifications spanning over a thousand years. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, it includes massive stone walls, bastions, ramparts, and a network of underground tunnels known as casemates. Visitors can explore sections of the fortifications on foot, walking along the ramparts for city views, or venture into the cool, dimly lit casemates that once housed soldiers and artillery. The site is distinctive for its sheer scale and the way it shaped the city's layout – entire neighborhoods were built around the fortifications. Highlights include the Bock casemates, the Pétrusse casemates, and the Vauban fortifications. It's a fascinating glimpse into military history and engineering.
