The Stelae of Nahr el-Kalb are a series of inscriptions and reliefs carved into the limestone cliffs at the mouth of the Nahr el-Kalb river. They commemorate military victories and political milestones from Egyptian pharaohs, Assyrian kings, Roman emperors, and modern armies, including French and Lebanese troops. Visitors can walk along a path to view the stelae, each marked with plaques explaining its origin. The site offers a unique, open-air historical record, with the oldest inscription dating to around 1300 BCE. It's a fascinating stop for history buffs, set against a scenic coastal backdrop.

Don't miss

  • See the stele of Pharaoh Ramesses II, the oldest inscription at the site.
  • Spot the Roman emperor Caracalla's inscription and the French Mandate-era plaque.
  • Walk the riverside path to view all stelae, with interpretive signs.
