Jerash boasts an unbroken chain of human occupation dating back more than 6,500 years, but its golden age came under Roman rule. Visitors walk along the colonnaded Cardo Maximus, past the Oval Plaza, and into two well-preserved theaters. The ruins also include temples to Zeus and Artemis, a hippodrome, and a forum. The site's remarkable state of preservation offers an immersive experience of Roman urban life in the eastern provinces.
Don't miss
- Walk the entire length of the colonnaded Cardo Maximus, still lined with original paving stones and columns.
- Stand in the center of the Oval Plaza, a unique asymmetrical forum surrounded by Ionic columns.
- Watch a performance or simply admire the acoustics in the South Theater, which seats over 3,000 spectators.
