Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse

The Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse is a historic port building at the Port of Yokohama, now a complex with a shopping mall, banquet hall, and event venues. It has two sections: Warehouse No.1, a cultural facility for art exhibitions and plays, and Warehouse No.2, which houses shops and restaurants. A balcony on the third floor of Building No.2 offers views of the harbor.

Getting there

Know before you go

• The warehouse is at the fringe of the Minato Mirai 21 area, near Bashamichi Station.
• Entry to the complex is free; paid entry applies to some events and the Christmas market.
• Building No.2 has a shopping mall and restaurant arcade; nearby sights include Yokohama Chinatown and Yamashita Park.

A bit of history

Built as customs houses in 1911 (Building No.2) and 1913 (Building No.1), the warehouses survived the 1923 Great Kantō earthquake with less damage due to iron-reinforced brickwork. After World War II, they were used by American occupation forces until 1956. Their role as customs houses ended in 1989. Restoration from 1994 to 1999 strengthened the roofs and structures, and the complex opened as the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse on April 12, 2002.
