Ryōsen-ji is a quiet Buddhist temple that played a pivotal role in Japan's opening to the West. In 1858, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States was signed within its halls, marking the end of Japan's isolation. Today, visitors can explore the temple's serene grounds, see the treaty-signing room preserved with period artifacts, and view a small museum that recounts the historic encounter between Commodore Perry's fleet and the Tokugawa shogunate.

Don't miss

  • See the treaty-signing room with original furnishings
  • Visit the on-site museum about Perry's expedition
