Chōraku-ji is a historic Buddhist temple in Shimoda that plays a central role in the annual Black Ship Festival, which commemorates Commodore Matthew Perry's arrival in 1854 and the subsequent opening of Japan. The temple grounds feature a monument to Perry and a statue of Townsend Harris, the first U.S. Consul General. Visitors can see the temple's main hall and a small museum with artifacts related to the festival and Perry's visit. The temple's location near the harbor offers a glimpse into the area's role in Japan's modernization.
