Nonkiya is a small, easily-missed oden shop tucked away in Osaka’s bustling Dotonbori shopping street. Most of the customers here are locals, which is a good sign that the food is authentic and well-loved. Their oden is particularly flavorful, with the beef tendon being soft and tender, and the tofu smooth and delicate. The owner is very friendly and patient, even if you’re a tourist struggling to decide what to order. There’s no seating available, so everyone stands around, eating and chatting, which gives it a lively, traditional izakaya atmosphere. The prices are reasonable and not too expensive. All in all, compared to other tourist-centric spots, this place feels much more local. It’s highly recommended for anyone interested in trying authentic oden!

This is surely a haven for reckless drinkers, no matter where you come from. Not to mention the legendary miso beef tendon skewer, oden-dashi was a perfect pair for sake and shochu. (‘Dashi-wari’ is another way to consume shochu, a heated glass of shochu mixed with oden soup, which I recommend) I’m not saying that this is the place you put the first out of any tachinomi or oden stand here. But if you seek for the environment where locals and travelers mingle, this one surely stands for you the best.

Best doteyaki in Osaka! This small bar is known for some of Osaka’s food staples, perhaps it’s most popular being doteyaki, grilled beef tendon glazed with a miso soy sugar sauce. This is definitely a local joint so arm yourself with some simple Japanese phrases. I did receive some stares being a foreigner, but the food was worth it. Just be as polite as possible and everyone is usually forgiving. Order a drink and enjoy the bar food. The location was a little hard to find and the signage was a bit obscure. The crowd was a bit rowdy and seemed to consist of regulars and after business workers. If you visit this market, make sure to make a pit stop here for some tendon skewers, you will not soon forget the sticky soft texture and flavor of this treat! It was so good I had to bring my wife from the hotel to try it.
