Shōsōin is a log-cabin style building on the grounds of Tōdai-ji, constructed in the 750s to store treasures belonging to Emperor Shōmu. It houses over 9,000 items, including Buddhist art, musical instruments, masks, and textiles from Japan, China, Korea, and the Silk Road. The building itself is a masterpiece of ancient architecture, raised on pillars to protect against moisture. The collection is only opened to the public for a brief period each autumn, but the exterior can be viewed year-round.
