Kasuga-taisha is a revered Shinto shrine in Nara, established in 768 and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is known for its thousands of lanterns, both bronze hanging lanterns and stone lanterns along the paths, which are lit twice a year during the Lantern Festivals. The shrine's main hall is painted vermilion and features a distinctive architectural style. The approach is a beautiful forested path lined with moss-covered stone lanterns, leading to the shrine complex. Visitors can also see the Manyo Botanical Garden nearby.

Don't miss

  • See the hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns donated over centuries.
  • Visit during the Mantoro Lantern Festival in February or August when all lanterns are lit.
  • Walk the atmospheric stone-lantern-lined path from the park to the shrine.
