Mount Wakakusa is a gently sloping, grass-covered hill that rises behind Nara Park. Visitors can hike to the summit for sweeping views over the city and the surrounding countryside. The hill is especially famous for the Yamayaki festival every January, when dry grass is set ablaze in a spectacular nighttime ceremony. During the rest of the year, it's a peaceful spot for a picnic or a leisurely walk, with deer often grazing on the slopes.

Don't miss

  • Hike to the summit for a 360-degree view of Nara and the Nara Basin.
  • Witness the Yamayaki festival in January, when the entire hillside is set on fire.
  • Spot wild deer roaming freely on the grassy slopes.
