Meoto Iwa, or the 'Wedded Rocks,' are a pair of rock formations off the coast of Futami, connected by a heavy shimenawa (sacred straw rope) that is replaced several times a year. The larger rock represents the male deity Izanagi and the smaller the female deity Izanami, symbolizing marriage and harmony. Visitors can view the rocks from the shore, especially at sunrise when the sun rises between them, creating a stunning photo opportunity. The site is a popular spot for couples and offers a unique glimpse into Shinto nature worship.

Don't miss

  • Photograph the rocks at sunrise when the sun aligns between them
  • See the small torii gate on the larger rock, added during rope replacement ceremonies
  • Observe the shimenawa rope, which weighs about a ton and is replaced in January, March, May, July, September, and November
