Ise Shrine, officially known as Jingū, is the holiest site in Shinto, comprising two main complexes: Naikū (Inner Shrine) and Gekū (Outer Shrine). Visitors walk through serene forested grounds to view the simple, elegant wooden structures that are rebuilt every 20 years in a ritual called Shikinen Sengū. The shrine is distinctive for its ancient architectural style, which predates Buddhist influence, and its profound spiritual atmosphere. Guests can pray at the outer fences, as the inner sanctuaries are off-limits, and explore the surrounding forests and the nearby Oharai-machi district with traditional shops.

Don't miss

  • Observe the thatched-roof main hall at Naikū, rebuilt in 2013, from the viewing area
  • Walk the peaceful forest path from Gekū to Naikū, passing the Isuzu River
  • Visit the nearby Oharai-machi district for traditional Ise udon and local crafts
