Jo-an is a celebrated National Treasure teahouse originally constructed in the early 1600s. It epitomizes the wabi-sabi philosophy of rustic simplicity and imperfection, with its thatched roof, earthen walls, and intimate interior. Originally located in Kyoto, it was moved to Inuyama in the 1970s and is now set within a serene garden. Visitors can view the exterior and interior (by appointment) to appreciate the subtle craftsmanship, including the alcove and sunken hearth used for tea ceremonies.

Don't miss

  • Observe the thatched roof and hand-sculpted earthen walls that define the wabi-sabi aesthetic
  • View the interior's tea alcove and sunken hearth, designed for intimate tea ceremonies
  • Stroll the surrounding garden, which complements the teahouse's rustic atmosphere
