Rocca Albornoz is a commanding medieval fortress that dominates the eastern edge of Viterbo's historic center. Built between 1354 and 1367 by Cardinal Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz, it was designed to assert papal authority over the city. The fortress features massive stone walls, a central keep, and a surrounding moat. Today, it houses the Museo Nazionale Etrusco, which displays a fascinating collection of Etruscan artifacts from the region, including pottery, bronzes, and funerary items. Visitors can explore the fortress's ramparts for panoramic views of Viterbo and the surrounding countryside. The museum's exhibits are well-curated, offering insights into the pre-Roman civilization that thrived in northern Lazio.
