The Borromean Islands are a group of three small islands in Lake Maggiore, located off the coast of Verbania. They are named after the Borromeo family, who have owned them since the 16th century. The islands are Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island). Each has its own character: Isola Bella is known for its lavish palace and terraced gardens, Isola Madre for its historic palace and botanical gardens, and Isola dei Pescatori for its charming fishing village with restaurants and shops. The islands are a top tourist destination, offering a mix of history, art, and natural beauty. Visitors can take ferries between the islands, spending a day exploring the palaces, gardens, and lake views. The islands are particularly popular in spring and summer when the gardens are in full bloom. The experience is unique for its combination of aristocratic splendor and lakeside tranquility.
