Basilica of Superga

The Basilica of Superga dominates the skyline from its hilltop location east of Turin. Built in the early 18th century, this baroque masterpiece was commissioned by Duke Victor Amadeus II to fulfill a vow made during the War of the Spanish Succession. The church's majestic dome and twin bell towers are visible from miles away. Inside, the basilica is richly decorated with marble, frescoes, and a grand altar. The real draw, however, is the terrace atop the dome, which provides a 360-degree view of Turin, the Po River valley, and the snow-capped Alps on clear days. The site also includes the Royal Crypt, where many members of the House of Savoy are buried. A small museum recounts the basilica's history and the royal family. The journey up the hill, by car, bus, or the historic Superga rack railway, adds to the experience, passing through wooded slopes and offering glimpses of the city below.
