The Cathedral of Syracuse, dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, is a stunning architectural palimpsest located in Piazza del Duomo on Ortygia. Its exterior is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque, with a grand façade by Andrea Palma. Inside, the cathedral reveals its ancient origins: the original columns of the Greek Temple of Athena (5th century BC) are incorporated into the walls, creating a unique blend of pagan and Christian elements. The nave is lined with these Doric columns, and the ceiling features a wooden coffered design. The cathedral also houses a silver statue of Saint Lucy, the city's patron saint, and a chapel with relics. The atmosphere is serene and awe-inspiring, with light filtering through Baroque windows.
