Castello Maniace is a formidable medieval castle perched at the southernmost tip of Ortygia island, commanding the entrance to Syracuse's Great Harbour. Built between 1232 and 1240 under Emperor Frederick II, it is a masterpiece of Hohenstaufen military architecture. The castle features a massive square plan with four cylindrical towers at the corners, surrounded by a dry moat. Inside, the courtyard is spacious and often hosts cultural events. The highlight for many visitors is the walk along the ramparts, which offer breathtaking 360-degree views of the Ionian Sea, the harbour, and the rooftops of Ortygia. The castle also houses a small museum with artifacts from its long history, including medieval weapons and ceramics. Its strategic location made it a key defensive stronghold for centuries, and today it stands as a proud symbol of Syracuse's medieval past.
