Santa Caterina del Sasso is a remarkable hermitage clinging to a sheer cliff on the eastern shore of Lago Maggiore. The complex consists of three distinct buildings: the church, the cloister, and the monks' quarters, all connected by narrow passages and stairways. The interior of the church is adorned with 14th- and 15th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the life of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The cloister offers a peaceful courtyard with a well and views of the lake through arched windows. The hermitage is reached by a long staircase carved into the rock, which adds to the sense of pilgrimage. The location is breathtaking: the lake stretches out below, and the mountains rise behind. Visitors can explore the small museum that displays artifacts from the hermitage's history. The site is also a popular stop for boat tours, as it is visible from the water. The combination of spiritual history, art, and dramatic scenery makes it a must-see.
