The Principality of Seborga is a small village and self-declared micronation located about 30 minutes inland from Sanremo. Perched on a hilltop, it features a 10th-century castle (Castello dei Doria) and a network of narrow, cobblestone lanes lined with stone houses and artisan shops. Visitors can explore the castle ruins, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Ligurian coast. The village's main square, Piazza della Libertà, is the heart of local life, where you might see the flag of Seborga flying alongside Italian flags. What makes Seborga distinctive is its unique status: locals claim historical sovereignty based on a medieval principality, and they elect a prince, mint their own currency (the luigino), and issue passports. The atmosphere is quiet and timeless, with a few cafes and a small church, making it a peaceful escape from the coastal crowds.
