Sant'Andrea della Valle is a prominent Baroque church near Piazza Navona, known for its massive dome, the second largest in Rome after St. Peter's. The church was built in the 17th century and features a grand facade by Carlo Maderno. Inside, visitors are struck by the vast, luminous space and the rich decoration. The dome, frescoed by Giovanni Lanfranco, depicts the Assumption of the Virgin and is a masterpiece of Baroque illusionism. The church also houses important works by Domenichino and Mattia Preti. It is famously the setting for the first act of Puccini's opera 'Tosca'. The atmosphere is majestic yet welcoming, with frequent masses and concerts.
